The global population exceeding 8 billion places increasing pressure on natural resources, with the dairy industry emerging as a major consumer of water and generator of high strength wastewater. Owing to their elevated organic, protein, carbohydrate, and lipid content, dairy effluents pose serious environmental risks, including eutrophication and biodiversity loss. Sustainable management therefore requires advanced wastewater treatment strategies and the valorization of organic rich by products. Membrane separation processes, particularly low-pressure ultrafiltration (UF), offer a promising approach. Literature indicates that turbulence promoting elements often 3D-printed and integrated into filtration cells enhance permeate flux and mitigate fouling. In this study, conducted in collaboration with the Membrane and Environmental Technology Research Group at the University of Szeged, we evaluated the performance of 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) promoters in UF treatment of model dairy wastewater. Three custom designed promoters were tested, two fitting tightly (64.85 mm diameter) into the filtration cell and one (64 mm) rotating dynamically due to a looser fit. Our results aim to elucidate the impact of dynamic promoter motion on permeate flux, solute retention, and fouling behavior, thereby contributing to the development of more sustainable membrane-based wastewater treatment technologies.
