The aim of this study is to explore the role of the visual representation of a segregated area in the reconstruction of local memory. The research was based on the analysis of a series of photographs taken 50 years ago, documenting the everyday life of a gypsy/roma settlement in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county in the 1970s. As a complementary measure, a series of photographs taken in 2012 were used to compare the images of the past and the present. The circumstances under which the photographs were taken were described in detail by the photographers themselves, thus ensuring the contextual authenticity of the images. Examining the series of photographs allowed a comparison of past and present, revealing characteristic elements of local memory and individual life stories. The results suggest that the photographs of the Gypsy settlements of the 1970s not only document the past, but also play an active role in shaping the identity and community memory of the current locals.
