Environmental influences affecting individuals today are turbulent, which is to say that they are complex and rapidly shifting. Value loss, aimlessness, and loss of direction were described by Andorka Rudolf, drawing on the ideas of Émile Durkheim (Durkheim 1893), as anomie (Andorka 2006). Because of these circumstances, attempts to plan one’s way of life have become an increasingly complex task for members of the younger generations (Székely – Kovács 2022). Another factor has also emerged: communication networks have become integrated with problem-solving processes, which has led, partly through language, partly through paradigmatic patterns, to schematic forms in social media. Adapting to linguistic (relational–strategic) schemas and models has become an important tool for success and for integration into peer small groups. “Self-images” therefore develop under the pressure of feedback, forming part of a kind of self-referential cycle whose foundation is communication. Based on the 2021 data collection of the “Hungarostudy” research series, we present, within a sociological-theoretical context, the interrelations among psychological factors of the Hungarian population, specifically stress, social support, and coherence. We do so by embedding these concepts in the holistic social theory of Niklas Luhmann, assuming (though not substantiating) their relationship to the digitalization outlined below.
