This paper examines the different aspects of double predication. There is a kell menjek (must go SUBJUNCTIVE, SGI) structure in Hungarian that is a stigmatized alternative of the standard kell menni (must go_ INF) structure. The former is termed as double predication in Hungarian linguistic literature. This phenomenon appeared at the end of 19th century as highly problematic from descriptive and historical points of view, and has often occurred since then, urging linguists of different fields (sociolinguists, descriptive and historical linguists) to clear the situation. I provide an overview of the conceptual, terminological, descriptive and historical aspects of the problem and I try to find solutions. I discuss prestige difference related to this structure, and also show how the opinion of purists has changed since the 1970s. At the end of my paper I present the results of a research studying the frequency and the horizontal and vertical spread of double predication structures in Hungarian.
