The figure and political activity of Johannes Benkner (1580–1653), an outstanding Saxon politician of Transylvania under Ottoman suzerainty in the first decades of the seventeenth century is analyzed in this study. Benkner as a close friend of Michael Weiss, the judge of the city of Kronstadt (Brassó/Braşov) was elected senator. The Saxons under the leadership of the city of Kronstadt opposed the tyrannical rule of prince Gábor Báthori (1608–1613) and Benkner had an important role in this struggle. Benkner led a diplomatic mission to Constantinople, and allied with Gábor Bethlen to get a support from the Ottoman Porte against prince Báthori. The opinions of the leading authorities of the city of Kronstadt varied, but at last the faction of Benkner overcame. After the fall and death of prince Báthori, Benkner was invited to the council of the new Transylvanian prince Gábor Bethlen (1613–1629). Soon it became clear, that prince Bethlen would have certain conflicts with the Saxons. Benkner changed his policy and turned towards the Habsburg ruler of the Hungarian Kingdom, Matthias II (1608–1619). When the pretender György Homonnay with Habsburg support planned to attack Transylvania in 1616, Benkner fell out of grace with prince Bethlen. Benkner was not sentenced to death or prison, but lost his position and influence.
