The level of capitalist development, the international relations (the rivalry between political powers and between alliances of powers), the social and economic conditions of the Maghreb countries,and therenewable internal forces of their societies determined the colonization of the three North African countries (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) and also the quality of theirdependency. Th e present article gives a detailed historical analysisof the establishment of the French rule in the three Maghreb countries. In case of Algeria the military interventionis described, while in case of Tunisia the emphasis is put on the French capital and diplomacy, because herethemilitary intervention was taken only as a conclusive action inthose crucial momentswhen economic and diplomatic pressure failed.Th e situation in the third country,Morocco was special: beside the French diplomacy other European powers (England, Germany and Spain) rivalled for its territory. By the time of the World War I the French colonial dominance in the three Maghreb countries became indisputable.
