In his research, Dr István Zimony studies the Magarabs.Th e historiographical antecedent of the study was Count Almásy’s report in 1935. Hedescribed for the fi rst time a Hungarian community of the Wadi Halfa who called themselves Magarabs. Th e name does not come from the combination of the Hungarian and Arabicwords; it is only a synthesis of the community’s name (Magar) and the Nubian ‘ab’ word which means ‘tribe’. In 1965, IstvánFodor visited the Magarabs who had to leave their dwelling-place, since it had beenfl ooded due to the building of the Aswan Dam. According to the tradition, the Magarabs’ ancestor was Ibrahim Magar who arrived in Nubia during the reign of the Ottoman sultan Suleiman;there he founded a family and his descendants became the Magarabs. However, Hungarians already lived in Egypt in the 15th century and king Matthias hada good relationship with the Mamlukruler.Later on, Hungarians were brought to this region as captivesand they servedas borderguards. Mr Zimonyifounda great deal of sources dating to the16-17thcenturies in which magar-named people are mentioned in connection of contracts and other relating documents. Based on the historical records, the Hungarian origin of the Magarab tribe is proven now. Th e emerging Magarab community lost the Hungarian language in one or two generations’ time,and their culture assimilated into local customs as well. At the same time they preserved a certain kind ofparticularism in their ethnic consciousness whose main element was the Hungarian ancestry.
