Abstract

The epos of Finns and Estonians proved to be a force making these nations and was at the same time, source and inspiration of arts, literature and science. Had such epics existed among the rest of Uralic peoples, those possibily would have played a similar roll in their cultural history. These peoples have now no such epics as Finns and Estonians do, nevertheless, there are certain fragments which make the past existence of some kind of epics possible. E. g., Gerd Kuzebaj came across fragments of epic poems, song-cyeles in villages of Udmurtia, only but few lines of his collection became known to the public. M. Hudjakov, a social-anthropologist of Russian origin — in the spirit of Lönnrot — compiled an epos based on genuine Udmurt material — in Russian. Géza Képes has found a prosaic legend in Munkácsi's collection, which — he maintains — has antecedents in verse. From this text he tries to "reconstruct" a part of the past epos of Udmurts — in Hungarian. Although uach of these discoveries and attempts has its own valeu, neither of them does solve the questionable problem of the Udmurtian epos.
