„Stefan Krebs 1898 õszén jött Feketicsrõl Szenttamásra, feleségével és két kislányával. Egy Prodanov nevû szerb ember hozta õket szekéren...” Ezekkel a szavakkal kezdõdik Gion Nándor legjelentõsebb mûve. A vajdasági magyar történelmi regény tehát egy német névvel kezdõdik. Ezt a korban mindenképpen provokatívnak számító felütést a mû többi része sem írja felül, hiszen a Latroknak is játszott tetralógiában – talán csökkenõ mértékben, de – mindvégig jelen marad a helyi németség nézõpontja. Tudjuk, a regénybeli Stefan Krebst az író anyai dédapja alapján mintázta meg, és a regényben elbeszélt történetekben számos helyen megjelennek a Gion(–Gallai–Krebs) család történetének valós részletei is. Ám ez önmagában korántsem indokolja a német szemszög olyan mértékû dominanciáját, mint amivel különösen a regényfolyam kezdõ fejezeteiben találkozunk. A regény 1973-as megjelenésekor az egész közép- (kelet-)európai térségben, a jugoszláviai Vajdaságban pedig különösen is meghökkentõ gesztusnak számított az itt élt német közösséggel való olyan fokú érzelmi azonosulás, mint amivel Gion regényének rögtön az elsõ oldalain találkozunk. Talán egyenesen tabudöntésnek is tarthatjuk, hogy a második világháború minden szörnyûségéért bûnbakká tett, kollektív bûnössé bélyegzett, majd a Vajdaságban megtizedelt, kényszermunkatáborokba hurcolt, végül kitelepített németekrõl a személyes családtörténet bensõséges hangján írt valaki 1973-ban. A családtörténeti emlékek lejegyzésén túl milyen célja lehetett ezzel Gion prózájának? “Stefan Krebs moved to Szenttamás from Feketics in the autumn of 1898 with his wife and two little daughters. A Serbian man called Prodanov brought them to the village in his wagon...” With these words begins one of Nándor Gion’s major works. Thus the historical novel about Hungarian Vojvodina begins with a German name. This gesture of the author was definitely deemed as provocative at the time of the publication , and was certainly not overwritten by the rest of the work (as known as the tetralogy titled ‘Latroknak is játszott’) in which the point of view of the local German minority is always present & relevant, albeit to different degrees. We do know that the Stefan Krebs figure of the novel is based upon the writer’s own maternal great-grandfather, and the stories of the chronicle of the real life Gion(– Gallai – Krebs) families are intermingled with the fictional narrative in many ways. But all that is far from being a justification for the overwhelming dominance of the point of view of the German minority felt especially in the first chapters. When the novel was first published in 1973 its strong emotional identification – already present on the very first pages – with the case of the German community living there came as a shock for the readers in the East-Central Europe region and particularly so for those in the province of Vojvodina. To write about the German question in 1973 in the intimate style of a family history is tantamount to – it really seems to be – breaking the taboo: that is to write empathetically about those local Germans who were made the scapegoat for all horrors end evils of the second world war, who were pronounced “guilty” collectively in Vojvodina, then decimated & deported to labor camps, and finally forced to exile. What purpose could that taboo-breaking possibly serve in Gion’s prose beyond the obvious – that is to record family stories & memories? This is discussed in this paper.
