The study presents the trends of relations between Hungary and Yugoslavia between the autumn of 1944 and the end of 1947, based on Hungarian, Serbian and Croatian professional literature. Its premise is that the collapse during the war did not just mean the failure of Hungary’s revisionist aspirations, it also severely burdened the relations between the two countries. Between 1945 and 1947 Hungary was a militarily occupied country, it lost its sovereignty and it was under the supervision of the Allied Commission (AC), therefore the relations were not rebuilt between two equally countries. The study presents in detail the activity of the Yugoslav delegation assigned to the AC, the problems that arose between the two governments, among others the question of the settlement of the German population of Bácska to Hungarian territory. The author describes in detail the anti-Hungarian retaliation in the Southland by the Yugoslav army and the local Slavic population, she mentions the property confiscation, dispossession of Hungarian citizens living in Yugoslavia, and also touches on the issue of Yugoslavia’s territorial claim to the Baja triangle, as well as the population exchange pact between the two countries that was concluded at the Paris peace negotiations in 1946, the implementation of which eventually did not occur. The last portion of the study discusses the establishment of Hungarian–Yugoslavian diplomatic relations, as well as the Hungarian–Yugoslavian friendship treaty signed on the occasion of Tito’s visit to Budapest in December of 1947. The good relation between the two countries was severed in the spring of 1948, because of the Soviet–Yugoslav conflict, thus as a result of international political reasons, and suddenly sank to a nadir.
