When the First World War broke out, Austria-Hungary had a decent force of cavalry in his armies. The Hungarian cavalry divisions and regiments had several tactical and field manuals. In these manuals were the basic rules about the principals of application for the cavalry in separate situations. The first manual was printed in 1875, and almost without any modifications the cavalry had to use the orders laid down there in the war. The basic task of the cavalry was the reconnaissance, covering their own forces. In attack the manual preferred charges with sabres on horseback more than fighting with firearms. The success of the charges was very mixed during the war. The military leadership of Austria-Hungary wanted the cavalry to do strategic reconnaissance in Russia, and if met with enemy cavalry to defeat it. This task was mostly carried out with success, but it had come to light very early, that the cavalry cannot win its fights in the new positional warfare acting as the old manuals required. Therefore the leadership tried to modernize the uniforms and equipment of the cavalry so they can fight against well dug-in infantry forces as well. The use of the cavalry has changed during the war, so near the end of it, the cavalry was rather a reserve force to exploit the success in the field than the main charging strike force. Unfortunately the lack of horses at the end prevented the huge reorganization of the cavalry forces.
