Abstract
Flavius Cresconius Corippus nem tartozik a legismertebb latin nyelvű költők közé. A Kr. u. 6. század elején született az egykori Africa provinciában, majd Iohannis című művének sikere után már a bizánci császári udvarban írta meg In laudem Iustini című, szintén epikus művét. A cikk a költő epikus hagyományban elfoglalt helyét értékeli, elsősorban előbbi eposzára támaszkodva. Corippus már a praefatióban egyértelművé teszi: ugyan elődjével, Vergiliusszal nem ér föl, ám főhőse, Iohannis messze túlszárnyalja Aeneast. A mű több az Aeneis stílusának keresztény elemekkel kiegészített, üres utánzatánál: az Africa fölszabadításáért vívott harc ideológiai alapját a római értékrend képezi, s Iohannis nem csupán keresztényként harcol a pogányság, hanem rómaiként is a barbárok ellen. Corippus lived during the 6th century in Roman Africa. He is known as the author of two panegyric epic poems: the Iohannis sive de bellis Libycis and the In laudem Iustini Augusti Minoris. Reading the preface of the Iohannis, we can see a modest and untalented man pictured, as he says, who claims to glorify John Troglita. Though the poet does not have any merits like those of Virgil, the ductor does. Constructing metaphors and images, even commenting on the weather, Corippus lends the epic style and verbal expressions of his predecessor. Furthermore, the conquest of Roman–Byzantine power and culture over barbarians is significant. In this paper, I provide a short summary on how we could find a proper place for Corippus in the Roman epic tradition.
