Absztrakt (kivonat)
The paper discusses the complex roles of the Roman villa in ancient Italy between 2nd century BC and the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The villa was originally a farmstead of the Romans, designed for agricultural production. As a result of the changing economic and social environment, from the 2nd century BC the structure of production in the villas shifted to meet luxury needs, which resulted in an increasingly grand design for these facilities. In contrast to this latter process, little villas/farms survived that continued small-scale production. The owners of the villas with specialized or large-scale production were Roman senators, knights, and emerging, wealthy homines novi and libertii. After a while elite villa owners wished to establish their villas as quality homes that nurture the mind as well, where production has a lower priority. Villas existed in the city and also in the countryside, and high quality rural villas increasingly ensured urban convenience and offered a sophisticated aesthetic experience to their owners. These properties, with their interior and exterior architectural design, created an artificial landscape, and as a poetic metaphor the villa also appeared in literature.
