In my study, I examined the effects of conversion on personal identity from several aspects. First, I found that the life histories of the monks of the Hare Krishna Movement have become structured according to their „new mentality”. The past events of their lives only gained significance in the aspect from which they had a role in their arriving at the Krishna consciousness. Aconsequence of this was the „homogenization” of the life histories. The multitude of similar turns was due to the uniformity of the retrospective interpretation framework. Second, my own research supported the conclusions of relevant literature, which state that personality traits do not change as a consequence of conversion, but elements of the identity do. I started on the basis of the McAdams personality model, and my results sustain that conversion „merely” alters the second and the third level, meaning the personal identity. The first level, the interviewees’ personality traits have not changed, even according to themselves. Third, on the basis of a story, I analysed the consequences of the abandonment of the Movement. For the narrator, who remained in the Movement, the leaving brought about an identity crisis. Abandoning a closed community, which owes its legitimacy to its belief in its teaching, may shake the remainers. This person was unable to heal the wound caused by the apostasy alone, he needed the help of the community. The success of the healing process depended on the ability of the members of the community to handle such a crisis.
