In this study I highlight the relationship between religion and folk beliefs through the results of my fieldwork in Visa. Language, ethnicity and religion represent determinant categories as a consequence of the particular social condition of this area, however their boundaries are not impenetrable. Nevertheless religiousness determines lives of both individuals and the community, folk beliefs – which are stronger and more inherent to consciousness and which are often integrated with the official religion, but conflict also on several points – designate frameworks of thoughts and behaviour in many cases. Beliefs are manifested in such mental conditions in which values, accepted by both the individuals and society, are threatened. By means of beliefs they give particular and typical responses to life threatening challenges and human anguish.
