What would have happened, had Alexander and his Macedonians turned against Rome? This bogus question and the answer for it appeared on the papyrus scrolls of Livy’s historical work. Livy’s well-known excursus reflects the contending attitude of the Romans towards Alexander. But how were the Greeks thinking about this question, who after the defeat of Pydna tried to evoke their glorious past through Alexander and his memory? This article tries to display how this aemulatio was discussed by the most celebrated Alexander-historian, Arrian of Nicomedia.
