Abstract
Joseph II’s edict issued on 26 January 1782 abolished the monastic orders of contemplative inclination in Hungary – the Carthusian, the Camaldolese, the Poor Clares’ and the Augustinian Nuns’ orders etc. - as well as the institution of hermitage. This process, dating back to the reign of Maria Theresa, was to transform the relationship between State and Church, and has frequently been analysed together with its interrelated aspects, such as those referring to the history of ideas, economy and politics.The praxis of the procedures was worked out in great detail. The overall asset inventory taken during the dissolution of a monastery – with everything on record, from the high altar to the horseshoe-nails dispersed in the forge – contained also an inventory of the equipment and furnishings of the church and cloister edifice. The future of the inventory items, the way they went afterwards, was of a great variety. The examination of the way of the relics of Saint Margaret and the investigation of the reaction of the Church and state offices during this process give possibilities to draw new conclusions about changing of her cult in the 17th and 18th centuries.
