Abstract
One cannot praise highly enough the direct and indirect role Lipót Löw, chief rabbi of Szeged, played in the emancipation of the Hungarian Jews and the creation of a modern rabbinical seminary where the education and training of “modern” rabbis have been characterized by the reconciliation of secular and religious sciences. The rabbi, born 200 years ago, played a decisive role in building up the spirit that required a modern school where rabbis were trained. Lipót Löw first raised the idea to create a rabbinical seminary on June 2, 1844, in the newspaper Pesti Hírlap. Finally, the adoption of the so called “emancipation act” (the XVII. act from 1867) led in 1877to the inauguration of the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary.
