Abstract
The search for national identity emerging at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth century provides the background for the movements which fundamentally determined the development of traditional folk culture. In addition to exhibiting national characteristics and ancient national culture, some towns and villages undertook to show and get to know their own existing values, and if they had none, to develop them. They created the experience of a sense of identity, security and belonging with the events, programmes and festivals established then. The Rose Wedding of Földeák established in 1872 is one of them. At the end of the twentieth century, the change of regime brought about a change of social conditions and roles that is a depreciation of socialist ideals together with socialism. This could evoke similar feelings to the ones in the past. The subject of my study, the Rose Wedding, in order to be adjusted to the continuously changing world, was filled with new meaning, and reorganized after more than 40 years. In my study, I examined the community festival of the past and that of today in its reorganized form comparing it to other European examples. In Földeák, besides the Rose Wedding, there have always been newer elements appearing in the tradition-creating trend of recent years. From among the community forming programmes and prizes, the village day festival awards the following prizes: „For Földeák", „The Most Beautiful Street of the Village" and „The Tidiest Yard of the Village". This is also the day when former inhabitants of the village and university and college students of Földeák meet every year again and again. In May, 1999, as a revival of once lived Whitsun folk customs, the title „The Village's Most Beautiful Whitsun House with a Marriageable Daughter" was awarded.
