Abstract

The liturgical veneration of the fesst devoted to Our Lady of the Snow has been provable among Hungarian believers since the end of the 14th century and it became general in the 15th century. In old documents or parochial records the fesst was mentioned already in the middle of the 15th century. In the beginning notes and invocations of the fesst were written only subsequently in liturgical calendars and festive texts. According to written sources the complete text ofmass was in usage atthe Franciscans of Szeged-Lowertown and Pécs already in the 15th century. Graduate Strigoniense denoted with the name ofTamás Bakócz, archbishop of Esztergom, contained a magnificent alleluia-melody with notes already at the turning of the 15th/16th century. The first complete liturgical text, Ab aeterno ordinata, was a poeticái officium which can be found already in codices of the 14th century in the possession of Austrian monasteries under the title De conceptione BMW. From here could it be transferred in the 15th century to hand-written and printed breviaries of Esztergom applied to the fesst of Our Lady of the Snow. Besides two sequences are known solely in Hungarian mass-books and presumably written by a Hungarian author. Stella maris ave (Analecta hymnica 8, 68) can be read only in a service-book from Esztergom printed in 1480. The sequence Christi matris insignia is in an unusual manuscript text of a fesst found at the end of a finely decorated copy of Missale Strigoniense printed on parchment in Venezia in 1489. This service-book was in the possession of an erudite Hungarian humanist prelate, Péter Váradi (+1501), the archbishop of Kalocsa, the sometime Lord Chancellor of King Matthias. The hand-written notes are supposedly Váradi's personal remarks.
