Abstract

In 1858, the first agricultural association in Gyula was established by the Hungarian Catholic farmers. They founded their community to be a religious association in the name of the Holy Trinity. In 1861, the Germans living in the town also established their agricultural association. Their decision was motivated by the votive feast held in remembrance of the hailstorm of 1760. Besides, after their liberation from serfdom, the farmers freed from the repressive care of the landowners had the determination to start their new lives under the patronage of the Holy Trinity. Special devotion to the Holy Trinity is showed by its depiction on the flag and the stamp and the holy mass ordered for Trinity Sunday. Both associations possessed the characteristic features of religious associations, guilds and bourgeois age associations. In addition to religious obligations, the association assisted its members in applying reasonable methods of farming.
