One of the lessons of the anthropological study of the senses is that the senses operate in relation to each otherin a continousinterplay ofimpressions and values. Asweknowsightwasgenerally deemedtobe thehighestandmostimportantofthe sensesin premodern Europe, within a religious context hearing - attending to the word ofGod -was often given primacy. Smell, taste and touch were rather neglected. The five senses are in the Christian European culture allegorical represented. If we wish to understand the cultural formation of senses in religion(s) we have to turn to the given (European- or non-European) cultures. There are divergences from the dominantsensory model by individuals or groups in the society. There are different meanings of senses in the different Christian denominations in the Western Christianity. Some of these differences may be institutionalized. For example, women my be understood to have different ways of sensing than men. Women have been traditionally been associated with the more „corporeal", „proximity" senses of taste, touch and smell, while men with the more „rational", „distance" senses of sight and hearing. In terms of everyday practices, women were expected to concern themselves with sewing, cooking, cleaning, and child care at home, while man went ot to hear and discourse, to see and „oversee" the world. The same differences are made in the religious life as well. But what kind of role do senses play in shaping the religiosity? The problems and questions on relations between senses and religion are not well enough elaborated in cultural anthropology, European ethnology, and folkloristics. Reading some handbooks on religion I did not find any reflections on senses. That is why I regard our conference to be important. The papers of the conference are dealing with this new viewpoint, analyzing senses in religious context, giving broader interpretation of senses in religous life and practices. The conference can pay the attention on relations of senses and religion through case studies from different disciplines, inspiring new researches.
