Abstract

In the North East-Carpathians the history of the Greek Catholic church began with the time of the unions. I investigate the artistic traces of Greek Catholic identity and martyr-cult of that time. The representations from the 17,h-20th century intended to emphasize the physical approbations of the martyr servanthood (Portrayals of Saint Jozafat Kuncewicz). The choice of those attributes referring to the mode of suffering served the apotheosistic compositions with a didactic feature revived after Tridentine. The 20th century claimed more martyrs from the Greek Catholic Chruch (Blessed Tódor Romzsa and others). A possible way in contemporary sacred art is to focus on the glorified portrayal of the martyr and refer to the martyrdom through hagiographic scenes.
