Abstract

By the 15th century the extension of the Ottoman Empire achieved the border of the Hungarian Kingdom. After the occupation of Serbia, Belgrade (Nandorfehervar) was revalued again, because it was principal fortress in the southern line of defence in Hungarian Kingdom. In 1440 Murád II conducted himself the first Ottoman attempt to siege of Belgrade. But in the historical research this siege is not adequate valued and lesser-known than the second Ottoman siege (1456). This lecture will analyse two anonymous, Byzantine chronicle-fragments parallel with contemporary Latin sources about this Ottoman siege. The Codex Barberinus Graecus 111 contains a voluminous and valuable description of this siege, including the previous civil war in Hungary, and the use of new technical invention (firearms, cannons). It is also important to mention, that philological analysis of this passages demonstrates the closer connection with chronicle of Antonio Bonfini (Rerum Hungaricarum Decades), than byzantine 'classicist' authors, like ChalcoJ condylas or Ducas. Another characteristic feature is the usage of new words, borrowed from Latin and Italian and not the ancient Greek language. Especially, the terminology of weapons, cannons (mortars, harquebus) and gunpowder. The usage of Greek word 'botané' (grass, herb) indicates the early substance form of gunpowder, too. Our other byzantine source is Chronicle No. 72a. A short chronicle, in which we can find a correct date of the first Ottoman siege of Belgrade.
