L’objectif de ce travail est double. D’un côté, il s’agit de revisiter, presque deux décennies après sa formulation, l’une des contributions les plus importantes à la compréhension du rapport entre la littérature et l’empathie, à savoir la théorie de l’empathie narrative de Suzanne Keen. D’un autre côté, cette contribution vise à explorer l’articulation entre l’empathie et l’autothéorie. À travers l’analyse de deux textes autothéoriques, l’un appartenant à la littérature française contemporaine et l’autre aux littératures autochtones du Québec, nous mettons en évidence les stratégies déployées dans la construction de plusieurs processus empathiques. Nous montrons aussi que l’autothéorie nous permet d’élargir la catégorisation de l’empathie proposée par Keen, en y ajoutant encore une catégorie, à savoir celle de l’empathie pour soi (self-empathizing). The aim of this contribution is twofold. On the one hand, it revisits, almost two decades after its formulation, one of the most important contributions to the understanding of the relationship between literature and empathy, namely Suzanne Keen’s theory of narrative empathy. On the other hand, I aim to explore the link between empathy and autotheory. Through the analysis of two autotheoretical texts, one belonging to contemporary French literature and the other to the Indigenous literatures of Quebec, I highlight the strategies deployed in the construction of several empathetic processes. I also show that autotheory allows us to broaden the categorization of empathy proposed by Keen, by adding another category, namely that of “self-empathizing”.
