Hungary's participation in the agression against Yugoslavia, the causes and consequences of the fourth and at the same time the last territorial expansion have been explored by Hungarian historiographers mainly as they affeet foreign countries. Refering to extensive Hungarian and Yugoslavian sources the author tries to present the Bárdossy goverment's policy towards national minorities in the first period of the military administration. In the first part of the study the author descibes the so-called „chetnik" war and pacification. With regard to the motives for the brutal vindicatory actions it's pointed out that in April the Hungarian military command and the government wanted to crash at the outset the possibility of any resistance which could have been directed against revision, one of the chief pillars of the counter-revolutionary systems foreign policy — in this case revision in the southern region was meant. This is the reason why mopping up in Bachka was mainly directed against the supposedly most faithful followers of united Yugoslavia, the former members of the „chetnik" organization and the ,,dobrovoljac"-s. The pacification beginning on 18th April (at the same time) indicated a Yugoslavian agrarian reform, the revision of settlements carried out by military means, the setting up of Hungarian settlements as well and it was in close connection with the overale settlement plans of the Hungarian ruling classes. The author examines carefully the foreign and internal political causes of the change in policy towards the Croation minority in Muraköz in the early days after the occupation and gives reasons why the implementation of military administration was delayed according to the author the ruling classes, without firm boundaries, wished to gain the support of the Croation mayority in Muraköz or at least their passivity with the help of a more tolerant policy towards national groups. On the one hand they were not afraid of international embroilments with conquered Serbia on account of atrocities against the Serbs on the other hand on the question of Muraköz they wanted to secure the friendly disposition of Germany and Ustasha Croatia for the Hungarian-Croatian boundary had not been verified. The last chapter of the study deals with the plans concerning deportation of Bachka Southern Slavs, the modification and failure of this plans. The Hungarian-German settlement talks, the clash of interests are presented on the basis of hitherto unknown sources. In the author's opinion the basic cause of failure in the negotiations in the following: the Germans considered the Southern Slav population — which was to be resettled and almost entirely driven out one of the basic elements in the ever-growing Yugoslavian resistance» The settlement plans of the Hungarian ruling classes were frustrated in the last resort by the Yugoslavian people themselves.
