Absztrakt (kivonat)

The study is based on the preliminary assumption that 15th—16th century principles of city architecture in Italy are not reflected in the urbanistic developments achieved, but rather in the so-called „ideal city" concepts. Theories of Alberti, Filarete, then those of Cataneo and Scamozzi, were devised to supply an architectural solution for an ideal society which is without conflicts but has a hierarchical structure and is subject to a principal power. Since the architectural theoreticians are not striving for social reform, their proposals to the questions under debate are not ideological but racional in character. City layout and society correspond to each other: in the geometrically symmetrical layouts the centre is the symbol of power, wealth and privilege, while the concentrically more outlying parts and peripheries symbolize the less well-to-do in social category. The central graphic pattern reflects rational principles as well as complying with aesthetic requirements, because — in accordance with the contemporary world picture - it symbolically expresses cosmic perfection.
