The Hungarian chronicles (the 15th century collection of chronicles, and the work of Simon Kézai) contain five sections of text which mention Germans and Latins (that is, Italians, in most probability) acting in close alliance against Hungarians. It can be determined that out of these five occurrences their joint actions in three cases (the battle of Augsburg in 955, the battle of Mogyoród in 1074, and the military operation against Hungary by the German king Henry IV) cannot be proved with all certainty. In fact, the chronicler only blundered upon the truth of the situation without the knowledge of the historical reality in connection with the description of the military campaign against Hungary by the Emperor Henry III in 1051. Out of the five occurrences only the contemporary reference to the time of king Péter (1038—1041, 1044—1046) abides the test-of a critical analysis of the historical sources. An author from a later time, the 13th century, concludes, incorrectly, from this single instance that the lost battles, difficult situations and nadirs of Hungarian history were one after the other caused by the joint actions of Germans and Italians, whom he thus portrays as traditional enemies of the Hungarians.
