The author examines the formation of the Hungarian Party in Yugoslavia and its involvement in the 1925 elections on the basis of sources from Hungarian and Yugoslavian historical archives. The paper refers to the standpoints of the contemporary Hungarian and Yugoslavian governments in connection with the formation of the party, as well as to the internal debates of the Yugoslavian Hungarian community about organizational questions. It also gives a brief analysis of the program of the party, which was formed in a time of disallowance and threats. The defeat of the party in the elections was aggravated by a serious internal crisis. The disintegration of the party was only avoided by determined interference on the part of the Hungarian government, which maintained secret ties with the party. Besides the intimidation widely used in the elections, which is seen as the sole cause of the defeat in contemporary documents, the author also considers another reason that played an important role in the events, namely the fact that the leadership of the party did not realize the doubly (ethnically as well as socially) threatened position of the Hungarian minority, and were not able to suggest an integrated alternative.
