Absztrakt (kivonat)

This is an article about the analysis of the speech acts of pragmatics, including an analysis of an illocutionary act in Hungarian usage. Firstly there is an introduction of the main theories of speech acts such as approaches of Austin (1962/1990) and Searle (1969/1997). This article also discusses a further theory, the study of Hickey (1986), which departs from Searle’s comment. While Searle submits that speech acts are individual/independent and universal, Hickey argues that speech acts, e.g. promises (or commitments) can be found as accessory sequence of another speech acts. Fraser (1981) says the same, in his study, promise appears like a strategy of apologizing. Although Searle declares that speech acts are universal, they have similar appearances in all languages, latest studies discovered that there are as many types and appearances of speech acts as many languages. For example, in West Africa, people make promise even though they know that they cannot keep it. Or among Jordanian Arabs, they have an expression which means that promising mostly comes true when Allah wants it. In this paper it also mentioned that Searle’s suggestion of honest/heart-felt/frank promises is unsupportable while we cannot examine the real feelings and thoughts of informants. This study shows a potential/possible methodology of sociopragmatics, the Discourse-Completion Task (DCT). It was used by the research of CCSARP in the 80’s, when the researchers wanted to obtain/obtained a large amount of data in a short time in seven countries. It was important that each harvest had to be comparable with another cultures. There are several advantages of this method, that is why I used it in my research too.
