Absztrakt (kivonat)
The main focus of the essay are the Crakers (a new race created with the help of genetic engineering) and their creators; Oryx, Crake, and Snowman. The trinity of the creators is visible both in their personal relationships (love triangle) and in their roles as mythological beings included in the religion of the Crakers. Both the worldviews of the creators and their personalities are present in the genetic makeup and worldviews of the Crakers. The first part of the essay deals with the future presented in the world of the novel. Cyborg and posthuman theories are dealt with in detail. According to various scholars defining a cyborg became an almost impossible task because everyone can be considered a cyborg who is using non-organic enhancements. Additionally, the world of the novel can be considered a critique of posthuman ideas because its people try to achieve; among others, immortality and physical perfection. The second part of the essay describes the trinity of Oryx, Crake, and Snowman. While Oryx is almost a mystical goddess and a protecting mother to the Crakers; Crake and Snowman shape their reality in a different way. Crake is more like a wrathful god whom the Crakers never met – the creator of the world and all beings in it. He it detached from human values and operates on the level of genes and evolution. In contrast to that, Snowman is more like a prophet or a hermit – he is the one who provides the Crakers with various stories and explanations. The essay concludes that, although the Crakers were supposed to be a new race without any memories or references to the past, they are still a reflection of past values and ideas, their whole existence a product of disappointment in the former human race.
