Until the middle of the twentieth century, different myths, legends, stories and religious folk hymns foretelling the end of the world lived in folklore. The printed descriptions of the end of the world-theme have been present in Christian Europe, since writing and pulp literature became widespread. Thanks to the significant role of the year 2000, we have been overrun by predictions and prophecies about the end of the world coming from the press, the television and the radio. Classical prints of pulp literature were substituted by handwritten, typewritten, photocopied, text edited new religious texts often of foreign origin. In my study, I examine these writings about the end of the world which I collected in Nograd County. These writings, without the assent of church, convey Virgin Mary's, Jesus Christ's and the saints' messages about the end of the world. They admonish people to have good morals and give detailed practical instructions to stand the trials of the last days. The writings presented here demonstrate a phenomenon of popular religion which is quite new but at the same time it preserves old traditions as well. They fulfil the function pulp literature did earlier, but they suggest topicality by providing practical information as well. This type of texts demonstrates the process of change and transformation of popular religion within a group of people nowadays considered to be one of the most traditionalist groups.
