The Rich Man's play (dúsgazdagolás), according to the definition in the first volume of Encyclopaedia of Hungarian Ethnograhy published in 1977, is „a dramatic play with more than one performers which used to be performed on Shrove Tuesday until around the second world war in Udvarhely and Gyergyó Counties and in other parts of Transylvania. It was called Devil's Carneval as well. It is the shortened and thoroughly reworked and folklorized version with song insets of the second act of Comico Tragoedia, a morality (1646) written by an unknown author. Supposedly, it was adopted from pulp literature for the repertoire of folk playing. The play tells the biblical parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus in the form of a dialogue. It shows the revels of the Rich Man, Lazarus's death, the fight for the rich man's soul, how the Rich Man goes to hell and his torments in hell ..." In the summer of 1995,1 discovered in Szentegyháza, Széklerland that the folk custom thought to be already forgotten is still alive. Then, I decided to try to document the custom as thoroughly as possible. Besides, I expanded the scope of research to some elements which have not been examined earlier, e.g. the semiotic analysis of dramatic plays, the observation of the preparations for the event, the way of performance and the study of the changes during the lifecycle of the custom. In the present study, I present two chapters of my thesis paper (József Attila University, Faculty of Arts, Department of Ethnology, Szeged, 1998) titled The Devils Nativity Play: The Dramatic Play of Poor Lazarus and the Rich Man in Szentegyháza. These chapters outline the researches by literary history and history of theatre on the Comico Tragoedia, the source of the Rich Man' play, and the ethnological and ethnomusicological researches and collections concerning the Rich Man's Play.
