This study is dealing with the custom of prechanting which is still practised in the Calvinist congregation of the Hungarian-populated SubCarpathian Nagydobrony, with one of the precentors, János Szanyi F. and the role he played in the life of the congregation. The custom of prechanting in Calvinist congregations goes back to the century of Reformation. At that time there were not enough religious songbooks available, and also only a few people could read. The course of the church and funeral public singings was the following: a man with a fine voice - or rarely a woman - prechanted, dictated the words of the songs line by line. In each congregation there were one or more men who felt fit for the role of the precentor. This person collected the words of the songs used at different congregational events and copied them from the former precentor into handwrittenbooks. TodayJánosSzanyiF. is one oftheseprecentors atNagydobrony who collected the words of the songs sung at services and funerals into three notebooks. The congregation surrounds the precentor with love and respect. He is usually invited to the wakes, funerals and even to the repasts that take place after the funerals. He considers these invitations an honour, and he fulfils the duty he got with his function and which was assigned to him by the community without any remuneration or compensation.
