Absztrakt (kivonat)

Sinope, present-day Sinop is situated at the northernmost point ofAnatolia on the shore of the Black Sea on the Northeastern corner of atrapezoid peninsula, on an isthmus leading to a vulcanic peak (Boztepe. The history of the city is inseparable from the Black Sea, since it has been one of its major port since the Milesian Greek colonization of the 7th century BC. . A special significance of Sinope is marked by its central layout on the Southern shore of the Black Sea and relative proximity (ca. 250 km) to the Crimea: the major sea route to which led nearby the city (a South -North route went from the Karambis Cape - present-day Kerempe Burnu to the Crimea and backwards the South - North sea currents carried the ship directly to Sinope). This North - South route was transversed by a traditional navigational route going coastwise from West to the East, these passes crossed themselves right in the mentioned port. The examined field is important not only for its navigation, but for its agricultural activity as well. The micro-climate of Sinope facilitated the olive production in the peninsula - mentioned already by Strabo -unparalleled in the Pontic region, but besides this region is fertile for the production of various fruits (fig, grapes, nuts), vegetables and for grain, too. The Sinope Promontory can be regarded as the most Mediterranean landscape of the Black Sea. The interpretation of the Black Sea as a research unit and economic system already appeared in the fundamental studies of Fernand Braudel and Gheorghe I. Bratianu, but it has not effected the Byzantine studies and the archaeological research of the Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages. The main questions of my paper are, if a Black Sea economic system existed in the Early and Middle Byzantine Periods? How far is this historiographical model appliable for the Byzantine period? How the changing economic role of the region is reflected in the history and monuments of one of its major ports?
