Absztrakt (kivonat)
The Third Century was the darkest period in the Roman Empire’s history. Th e imperial structure of the principate, which was created by the great August, could not cope with the new problems successfully. Around 259 or 260, when emperor Valerian was captured by the persians, the circumstances of the crisis became more serious. Th e empire needed new ways, and Gallienus was himself, who made the fi rst urgent steps. In the years of 260 he added important changes. Under his reign new mixed units appeared in the roman army, which were called by vexillationes. He fortifi ed the empire’s defensive system with many strongholds, and the most important among of these was Milan. Instead of the senators he raised up the talented knights and soldiers to the main military, administrative and fi nancial positions. Gallienus also founded new mints, and with his golden coin (aureus) he tried to resolve the monetary crisis. On the whole we can say, that the empire’s reconstruction began with Gallienus, because he had created the necessary conditions for a new Rome.
