The historical antecedents of contemporary Spanish-Turkish diplomatic relations go back to the 16th century, to the period of the struggle for hegemony over the Mediterranean between the Ottoman and Spanish empires. The normalization of diplomatic relations began only two hundred years later, with the signing of the Peace of Constantinople in 1782, but after that, the relationship between the two countries was characterized by a kind of mutual disinterest. which can be attributed to the fact that both empires were faced with increasingly serious challenges. They had to devote all their energies to dealing with the protracted and deepening crisis and then the disintegration of their empire. This paper examines one of the rare meeting points, following the reflections of a contemporary Catalan politician, Francesc Cambó, regarding the birth of the Republic of Turkey. Cambo was one of the most important politicians of the first third of the 20th century in Spain, the first Catalan nationalist politician who exerted a decisive influence on Spanish political life, and also had serious connections on the international scene. In the summer of 1923, during a sea trip lasting several months, the Catalan politician gathered his own experiences and impressions of the conditions that had developed in the region following the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. His travel reports containing analytical evaluations were originally published as a series of newspaper articles and then as a book. Francesc Cambó’s vision of the transformation of Turkey after the war reflects a specific perspective, the nationalist position of bourgeois Catalanism.
