Film as a special form of “weapon” appeared in the First World War, but it made its real debut in the Spanish Civil War. Both the nationalist, insurgent group (the Right) and the followers of the legally elected Republican government (the Left) made use of the “power” of fiction films, documentaries and newsreels. Propaganda, influence, manipulation, biased reports: these keywords were the most important characteristics of the period’s film production, but not exclusively in Spain: some foreign countries, such as the United States of America, the Soviet Union, Germany and Italy, also produced various types of films about this Spanish carnage. Due to this international interest, the Spanish Civil war became the first visually documented armed conflict in the world.
