In the role of József Ökrös (1816-1893) one can fin dall those functions which bind him to the so calles licentiate: leader of pilgrimages, writer of church songs, precantor, organizer of the paraliturgy and religious societies, mediator of reli-gious knowledges, healer. As the co-operation in the liturgy was always the task of the cantors in Kunszentmárton, birth place of József Ökrös, precantors served mainly the paraliturgy. He was initiator of opening of a new cemetary, of build-ing of new cross way and chapel. Through this activity he formed new spaces and places for the religious community of Kunszentmárton. With his activity József Ökrös József bridges the distance between the enlight-ened opinion of priests and of the people’s religious practice in the 19th century.
