Absztrakt (kivonat)
The spread of railways transformed the circumstances of pilgrimage in the 19thcentury. Visiting shrines by train was faster, cheaper and more convenient. There were two Budapest church congregations to recognize first the benefits of railway travelling. The Franciscans organized an one-day pilgrimage by train every year from Budapest to Máriabesnyő. The Mariazell’s pilgrimages claimed a much larg-er effort more time and financial sacrifices. The Parish Church was the coordina-tor of the pilgrimages to Mariazell. The pilgrim trains were less popular than the special trains from the countryside to St. Stephen’s Day procession in Budapest.
