Abstract
The song analyzed in this paper belongs to the group of songs that are about the separation of soul and body. Its structure is determined by a string of dialogues. Although there is no dialogue between the soul and the body, the mourning woman nevertheless initiates dialogue with the mourners. At the end, she addresses the deceased to say farewell, which is unusual in this particular genre. The dialogue between the grey duck and God is a crucial part ofthe song. Another peculiar feature is that the song opens with a cosmic vision, evoking visions of the creation of the world. The candle burning by the coffin and the dew in the garden around the house receive symbolic meaning and are connected to the elements of fire and water from which the world was created. The roads crossing the world are important symbols: these represent both the soul's journey to God, the journey of the duck to God as a messenger of death, while the silken grass overgrowing the roads of the deceased symbolize both the end of the road and the end of life. The central role of the grey duck is a motif clearly inspired by the Finno-Ugric myth, as Russian nuptial and lyric folk songs prefer the swan and the goose. Furthermore, the duck is presented in the song with ducklings, which enriches the semantics of the duck in the song, and suggests that life continues after death.
