Absztrakt (kivonat)
This paper examines Nikolaus von Verdun's enamel altar, a work of art created at the end of the 12th century based on typological symbolism. Following the typological system devised by Saint Augustine, the altar combines scenes from the Old and New Testaments into a monumental composition. By examining the altar, this paper seeks to explore the possibilities of visually rendering and representing religious concepts and mental constructs in a powerful manner, and also raises the question of how the patterns and processes of the cognitive apparatus, vision and visual perception enable and, at the same time, determine the artistic and compositional repertoire of art.
