The author deals with the syntactical function of the infinitive beside the verbs látszik, tetszik, tűnik 'seem (to do sg)', hallatszik, hallik 'be heard (to do sg)' (meg)szűnik •cease (to do sg)'. In the Hungarian linguistic literature this infinitive is regarded as a second grammatical subject beside the nominal one. The author points out that this attitude results in contradictions at the analysis of Hungarian sentence constructions. 1. This infinitive doesn't adapt itself to the rules of the congruence with the predicate, like the real subject does. 2. In this constructional form the infinitive is not able to wear the personal endings, though it is always able to wear them in other constructions when it is really a grammatical subject. 3. This infinitive is neither semantically nor syntactically equivalent to a subject clause, — but: 4. it is perfectly equivalent to an adverbial clause. 5. It's grammatical function always corresponds to the function of an adverbial phrase expressed with a nominal or adjectival base. Relying upon these findings she suggests not to consider this structure as a verb with two subjects, calling them "the structure with double subject"; in her opinion the infinitive of these structures were always a regular adverbial complement.
