In his Mechanismus der menschlichen Sprache nebst Beschreibung seiner sprechender Maschine from 1791 Wolfgang von Kempelen publishes the numbers from 1 to 10 in twelve languages, among them also in Selkup under the name „Siberian Ostyak". It is the first - though not quite correct - reference to a Samoyedic language in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In connection with the names of the basic numbers in Selkup the author discusses the problem of Samoyedic and Finno-Ugric numerals in respect to their Uralic background. Specific focus directed on the gap between numerals 6 and 10, i. e. on numerals 7, 8, 9 including 10 which lack autochtonous names in most cognate languages. Attempts are made to solve the ProtoUralic paradox of „how to count from 1 up to 10 without having indigenous names for 7, 8, 9 and 10."
