In 2014–2017, excavations were conducted at the site of the Late Medieval and Turkish Period castle of Dombóvár. The Castle of Dombóvár, which was known as Dombóvár–Gólyavár, was occupied by Turks in 1543 or 1546. The castle remained in Turkish hands until 1686. Excavations clarified the building history of the Medieval castle. During the digs, a large number of ceramic fragments (large groups of kitchen- and tableware, stove tiles) came to light. Ceramic finds are significant, and on the basis of their dating, they can be divided into two groups: an earlier one (from the beginning of the 14th century to the middle of the 16th century) and a later one (from the middle of the 16th century to the end of the 17th century). Our investigations focused on some basic questions of Late Medieval and Turkish Period’s pottery. Our goal was to assess whether the raw materials of ceramics from different periods are similar and whether there were changes in ceramic technologies through the time. From the finds, 57 samples were chosen, which were examined with petrographic and micro XRD analysis. For the archeometrical analysis, a sample group of ceramic fragments was selected from the Medieval pottery and a homogenous group of ceramics from the Turkish Period. The analysis of ceramics from the Hungarian-Ottoman-Turkish castle of Dombóvár–Gólyavár provided a good opportunity to examine the character and extent of Turkish impact on the organisation of ceramic production, and to analyse how homogeneous or varied the ceramic production was.
