My study introduces three significant figures from the Jewish religious popular music scene (Shlomo Carlebach, Debbie Friedman and Matisyahu). Through these three case studies I examine the participants’ understanding of music and how (religious) identities are defined and redefined through reli-gious popular music. Questions of world views, religious attitudes, identities are brought to the fore. I would like to shed light on how the relationship to com-munity, tradition and religious tradition is contested through Jewish religious popular music.
