The first department of ethnology in Hungary was established in 1929 at the Ferenc József University which escaped from the Rumanian occupation from Kolozsvár to Szeged. The first full professor of the department was Sándor Solymossy. In 1934, the ministry revoked professorship in Szeged, and appointed István Györffy professor of ethnology to the Péter Pázmány University in Budapest establishing the department of ethnology of Budapest. Still, the University of Szeged preserved its Institute of Ethnography. Education of ethnology and fokloristics continued under the direction of Sándor Bálint honorary lecturer (1904-1980), Professor Sándor Solymossy's assistant lecturer together with Károly Cs. Sebestyén honorary lecturer. Sándor Bálint was appointed head of department and full professor in 1947. Sándor Bálint was not easily tolerated by the socialist dictatorship. In 1951, his right to instructing was withdrawn and he was transferred to the university library. Only after the 1956 revolution could he read lectures at the university again. In June, 1965, Sándor Bálint was brought to trial and he was found guilty of incitement against the established socialist social order. Sándor Bálint was compelled to apply for the retired list. January 31,1966, he was removed from his post. In 1964, Imre Ferenczi (1931-1989) came to the department for Sándor Bálint's invitation. He made every effort to improve the conditions of the department but, for long, with little success. The department having only one lecturer for decades received a new college in 1989, when Tibor Bellon (1941 2002) became senior assistant professor. At this time, the Faculty of Arts decided to develop the line of ethnology and the Department of Ethnology. In 1991, Antal Juhász became the head of the department. In cooperation with Tibor Bellon, and Gábor Bama who was employed at the department in 1993, he developed the educational plan of the line of ethnology and brought it into action. From 1991 to 1998, the head of the department was Antal Juhász, from 1998 to 2002, Tibor Bellon, and since 2002 Gábor Bama occupies this position. Bertalan Pusztai has been working at the department as an assistant lecturer since 1997, and András Simon was employed in 2002. Besides, well-known guest lecturers from Hungary and abroad read lectures at the department. Since July 1, 2003 the name of our department has been Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology. The change in the name expresses the expansion of the frames of education, themes and attitude. „Ethnology" refers to the study of Hungarian and European traditional peasant culture and heritage and its comparative research, while „Cultural Anthropology" refers to the holistic view and interpretative analysis of culture in general. Since 1992 fall, ethnology has been a separate line of the Faculty of Arts giving university degree. Since 1998, students can further specialize in ethnology of popular religion, which is a speciality of our department in the field of ethnology/anthropology in Hungary. Publications of the department: Devotio Hungarorum, publications of primary sources of popular religion, Szegedi Vallási Néprajzi Könyvtár/Bibliotheca Religionis Populáris Szegediensis (Library of Popular Religion, Szeged), Néprajz és Nyelvtudomány (Ethnology and Linguistics) (1957-2002), Táj és Népi Kultúra (Region and Popular Culture), Folklorisztikai olvasmányok (Reader in Folkloristics). Education is based on credit system. In the first phase, basic subjects like history of the discipline, basic methodology, and Hungarian ethnology are taught. In the next phase (usually in the third and fourth year), Hungarian and European comparative ethnology, folkloristics, and anthropology are studied. In this phase, the ethnology of popular religion specialization can be taken. Since 1995, our department organises an international student seminar called Seminarium Ethnologicum Szegediense (SemEthnoSz) for which students and teachers are invited from several European countries. Theoretical preparation is followed by fieldwork and its evaluation. The results of the researches are published in bilingual volumes. Connections with universities: in the framework of the Socrates and CEEPUS programmes, our department has exchange connections with several universities in Europe. Our department organizes the international Conferences on Popular Religiosity in Szeged and conferences on migration as serials every second year. Lecturers, professors and the head of our department are members of several Hungarian and international ethnological societies.
