Absztrakt (kivonat)
Agyich István, or Stjepan Adžić, was a priest and a poet in one person, writing most of his literary works during the last two decades of his life. His occasional poems, written in Latin in elegiac couplets and hexametric verse, tell pseudo-mythical stories about the places where he lived: Slavonia (Croatia), where he was born, and Baranya and the city of Pécs (Hungary), where he was a prebend. Agyich fills his poems with historical data about these regions, and in some cases he uses notes to illustrate crucial historical events that have shaped the history of these landscapes, such as the Battle of Mohács. This paper seeks to understand the reasons for, and the structure of, Agyich’s fractured way of narrating, given the abundance of his erudite notes or his study of preserving historiographical data through literary genres such as epic poetry or idylls. Accordingly, this paper briefly outlines some relevant thoughts on eighteenth-century historiography, alluding to the Georgia Augusta in Göttingen as well as Johann Christoph Gatterer’s (1727–1799) scientific method in this field. Similarly, notions of spatial poetics come to the fore. With the help of these scientific paradigms, this paper assumes that historical data is only interesting enough if it can be arranged according to places and moments in space and time, as eighteenth-century historiography teaches, and if these places and moments in space and time can be filled with special meaning, as spatial poetics tells us. Therefore, in the case of Agyich, this paper argues for a view of occasional poetry in which it is of great importance that scientific results and poetic rendering of historiographical data are mixed simply for the sake of filling the above-mentioned regions, such as Slavonia, Baranya, and Pécs, along historical events with meaning relevant to the author.
