The enlightened absolutist rulers also thought of the Jews as subjects who could be changed and made useful. Differentiation of the Jewish institutional system, the decline of religious authority, the questioning of institutional legitimacy, the rationalisation of religious tradition, the pluralisation and individualisation of faith appeared in the Jewish communities as a modern phenomenon. In terms of the manifestations of the Jewish population’s loyalty towards the Austro-Hungarian state there were differences between the Jewry in Habsburg-Austria and in Hungary. While the former were expected to display a dynastic loyalty, the latter were expected to identify with the modern notion of the Hungarian nation. The Budapest-based Neolog Israelite weekly, Egyenlőség ascribed the continuing existence of peace between the peoples and denominations of the Monarchy to the Dynasty. It madethe Dynasty appear to be an institution above nations and religionswhich alone was destined to preserve the unity of the Empire. The essay studies the expectations of the power elite, the political reports of the civil society and the religious interpretations of Judaism adapted for the present.
